ATO Cautions Against Scams During Transition from myGovID to myID

Important Alert: ATO Cautions Against Scams During Transition from myGovID to myID

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has issued an alert concerning potential scams related to the ongoing transition from myGovID to the new myID system. Although the branding and interface are being updated, the functionality of myID will remain identical to that of myGovID.

Essential Updates You Should Know:

  • No Need for New Setup: There is no requirement for users to create a new myID account or to re-verify existing details due to this update.
  • Scam Awareness: Be vigilant if you receive requests to reconfirm your details; these are likely scam attempts.

Understanding Scam Tactics: Scammers are distributing fraudulent messages that include links directing to a fake myGov login page. These pages are crafted to harvest personal information such as myGov login credentials, which can then be exploited for identity theft or other fraudulent schemes, like refund fraud.

Below is an example of how these scam messages may look:

Safety Tip: Always navigate to your myGov or myID account by entering the URL directly into your web browser’s address bar, rather than clicking on links found in messages or emails.

Protective Measures from the ATO:

  • Direct Access Only: The ATO will not send SMS or emails that include links or QR codes to log into online services. Always access these sites directly by entering ato.gov.au or my.gov.au in your browser.
  • No Unsolicited Requests: You will not receive any unsolicited requests from the ATO asking for personal identifying information via SMS or email.
  • Avoid Suspicious Links: Do not click on links, open attachments, or download files from questionable emails or SMS. Legitimate ATO communications will not include unsolicited hyperlinks.
  • Official App Downloads: Ensure that the myID app (previously myGovID) is downloaded only from official app stores, such as Google Play or the App Store.
  • Confidentiality is Key: Never share your login codes with anyone.
  • Social Media Security: The ATO does not use social media platforms to request personal information, discuss documentation, or request payments through private messages.

If you are uncertain about the authenticity of a communication purporting to be from the ATO, do not respond directly. Instead, verify by calling the ATO at 1800 008 540.

Reporting Suspicious Activities: Report any dubious contact claiming to be from the ATO to ReportScams@ato.gov.au.

Stay informed and safeguard your personal information during this transition period.
